Tree Dedicated in the Memory of Librarian Michelle Facto

Michelle Facto was an amazing and innovative member of the Maitland Public Library staff. She served as the library’s first Assistant Public Services Librarian starting in September 2007, and soon after she was promoted to the Public Services Librarian. Michelle shared many inventive ideas with staff and patrons, and her optimistic attitude was contagious. She was wonderful addition to the library team and dedicated the library profession; most of all, she was a vibrant and fun-loving person. We unfortunately lost her all too soon on June 30, 2008. Michelle will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

A Dahoon Holly tree was planted in Lake Lily Park in Michelle’s memory on Sunday, May 3rd as part of the City of Maitland’s Arbor Day Celebration. The tree is located to the left of the overlook located in front of the Maitland Civic Center. A memorial plaque will be placed by the tree this summer.

Honey for your Health

On Wednesday, May 20, Winter Park Honey's Beekeeper Jean presented a wonderfully informative presentation on beekeeping and how honey is beneficial to your health.

Creating a Special Card for Mom

On Sunday the week before Mother's Day, a numbers of patrons spent part of the afternoon making special mother's day cards for their mom, aunts, and grandmas. The cards were original designs provided by the staff or some patrons created their own inspirations.

Maitland Public Library Association @ Maitland Relay for Life

May started with an all-night fund-raiser to remember, honor and help those with cancer.

Maitland Library Association fielded one of the 19 teams at the Maitland Relay for Life May 1st and 2nd, held behind 555 Winderley Place, near Lake Destiny, and sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Janet Andrews, Karen Potter, Karen Gallagher, Bennie Rivera, Melissa Phillips and her son Ryan, Pat Russell and her friend Steve, Michelle Swiat, Joan Dye and her grandson Kyle, and Michael Cira had fun and supported the event at some point.

Both private businesses and public service organizations raised money throughout the night at their booths and through their paricipation in contests, and all had members on the "track," lit by luminaria and bopping to the music of the DJ.

Thanks to Bennie Rivera for representing the library on the track for 7 hours and to Pat Russell for doing an outstanding job organizing the team!

At the Library booth roasted corn, cookies and brownies complimented the offerings of coffee and comraderie at the VITAS booth and the pulled pork at the booth "next door."

Thanks to the generosity and RV of Janet Andrews, library staffers were able to catch a few "Z"s and attend the Closing Ceremonies in the morning. Thank you to all library staff, patron, friend and family supporters! We raised $730.oo, and had a blast as well!

Maitland Children's Art Festival

The Maitland Public Library participated in this year's Maitland Children's Art Festival. Miss Kristen and Miss Michelle helped children make some paper plate dream catchers to celebrate the Native American theme. Thanks to the Maitland Art Center for organizing the event and including the library. See you again next year!

Dr. Seuss Party

Fun was had by all of the participants at our very own Dr. Seuss Birthday Party. We had some birthday cake, played Green Eggs and Ham (Seuss version of pin the tail on the donkey), made some artwork for the library and colored some Dr. Seuss coloring pages. Check out the pictures below.

Writing Workshop Saturday, March 7th, 1:30 p.m.

Workshop presenter Dale Slongwhite, owner of WriteLines in Altamonte Springs, has been writing all of her life, and presenting creative writing workshops professionally for six years.

She coaches writers of all ages. Her published works include a memoir, Gathering, and she is currently working on a book project with Florida Hospital. This will be Dale’s third writing workshop at the Maitland Public Library. We're glad to have her back!

Everyone is welcome. No registration is required. Bring your imagination (and a pencil)!

Off to a good start: "Vegetable Gardening in Central Florida" workshop

A big "thank you" goes to Ed Thralls, residential horticulture and master gardener coordinator for the Orange County Cooperative Extention, from Maitland Library and the attendees of his workshop, "Vegetable Gardening in Central Florida" on February 13th. Using props as well as Power Point slides, Ed showed when to start a successful garden (in February, for warm-weather vegetables), how to prepare the soil, and when Florida gardens "rest" (during June and July). Thank you, too, Ed, for the "Manual of Minor Vegetables" donated to the library's gardening section! We look forward to having you here again.

Vietnamese Spring Rolls @ MPL

Local author, HA RODA presented a program on how to make Vietnamese Spring Rolls at the Maitland Public LIbrary on Sunday, February 22. In addition, to learning to make the perfect spring roll, attendees learned about the history of Vietnamese foods and customs.

Resolve to Get Organized in 2009 Talk

Jeannine Carlisle, owner of Apex Organizing, inspired us Saturday in her informative talk and in-depth question-and-answer session. She emphasized setting reasonable goals and "just getting started" in getting de-cluttered, as well as introducing easy-to-remember acronyms like O.H.I.O. (only handle it once).

A display of books on organizing, some of which Jeannine mentioned, will be in the library Reading Room, along with a bibliography of other helpful resources for you to take home.

The Maitland Public Library will also close early @ 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday December 31 and will be closed all day on Thursday January 1, 2009!

Make Your Own Holiday Cards

The Holidays are here again and that means sending cards to family and friends. The library can help you make your very own holiday cards without the use of a computer or fancy expensive equipment. Just bring along your creativity and we will provide the supplies to make one of your own cards to bring home. The library welcomes two new employees and congratulates one current employee on a new position.

Melissa Phillips is our new Public Services Librarian. She comes to us with a background of service at Universal Map Company and AAA.

Deborah Mize joined the staff as Technical Services Librarian after a fourteen-year career with the Seminole County Library System.

Michelle Swiat joined the library staff last year as Assistant Public Services Librarian and recently moved to the Youth Services Librarian position.

We are so happy to have these talented professionals working with us. Stop in and say “hello” when you can!

It's here! The Friends of the Library semiannual book sale will begin Thursday October 2 and run through Sunday October 5. Come and browse the hundreds of books, movies and music at amazing prices. After you have made your purchases, wander over to Lake Lily to enjoy the Rotary Arts Festival, which runs from Friday October 3 until Sunday October 5. Are you interested in yoga, but not sure if it's right for you? Are you not sure if you want to commit your time and money to many weeks of classes?

Well then our Introduction to Yoga class with Lenny Barrett is just for you!Saturday July 26 at 2:00 p.m., Lenny Barrett will introduce you to yoga and even show you some beginner poses. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat or a towel.

This program is open to all skill levels, but is primarily targeted towards adult beginners. If you have a limited range of motion, you can still do yoga; Lenny will address any type of limitations you might have and how to adjust your yoga positions.

On Wednesday, June 11th Publisher’s Weekly reported that children are still reading for pleasure, despite the distractions of the Internet.

The 2008 Kids and Family Reading Report was conducted by TSC for Scholastic, Inc. According to PW, the study “found that a majority of children (68%) think it is “extremely” or “very” important to read for pleasure, and, “like” or “love” doing so.”

Summer's Here!

If you’ve ever heard the term “summer slide” you know it refers to the failure of children to retain what they learned during the school year as they enjoy their summer vacations.

The library has a solution to that problem: Summer Library Program.

There are two parts to SLP. The first is weekly activity programs for students going into first grade, through fifth grade. These are held on Thursday afternoons.

The second (and our most favorite) part is the reading portion of the program. Children, adults and families sign up to read at home and receive prizes for reading certain numbers of books.

Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends can read to pre-readers. Adults can read to each other, if they choose. Kids can read to their pets, if they like. The point is to get everyone in the household reading.

New Catalog is Up and Running!

As reported today in the Orlando Sentinel (thanks, Sentinel!) the library’s new catalog is open for business. If you go to our website (www.maitlandpubliclibrary.org) and click on “Library Catalog and more!” you will see our new “lobby” page, which is the launching pad for all kinds of new “rooms” about the library. Up front and center is the catalog search box. If you want to see information about your personal account, use the login boxes in the upper right corner. Your PIN number is the last four digits of the phone number you gave us as your home phone.

Enjoy! And let us know if you need assistance. We love to share information about our new system.

New Catalog

Exciting news! Towards the end of May, the library will be introducing new catalog and circulation system. Easier access to your online account, family cards and a new website are just a few of the perks that will result from this new system. As with any new adjustment, please be patient with the library staff as we navigate this exciting new system.

Book Sale - It's Coming!

It's that time again! The Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale will begin Thursday April 17 and continue until Sunday April 20. The book sale will open at 10:00 a.m. every day. Don't forget to visit the Maitland Art Festival, which will be held the same weekend on Saturday April 19 and Sunday April 20 around beautiful Lake Lilly. The Patriot Act is in the news again. Congress and the President are debating the legalities of telephone wiretaps and related issues yet again.
Librarians worry about the provisions of the Act which give government access to patron’s borrowing information without letting the patron know they’re looking.
How can you keep prying eyes away?
It’s easy. Bring materials back to the library on time. Overdue books set into motion our automated library system’s function of tracking the materials and then assessing a fine once they’ve been returned.
Information about materials returned on or before their due date disappears from the system within 24 hours and is not recoverable by any means.
Overdue or lost materials generate a history which remains in the system until the fine is paid or the lost item is paid for. Always get a receipt for your payment and ask that your history be deleted.
It’s the library’s job to provide materials that are useful to our patrons. It’s the patron’s job to use them wisely.
