Nightmare Before Christmas program this Saturday 2 - 4 p.m!

December 18th from 2 - 4 p.m. 

Join us for a fun and musical filled time as we bring the hit movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas to life.  Enjoy live action skits, puppetry and sing-along songs from one of Tim Burton's greatest films!  Stay after the show for crafts and light refreshments.

This program is FREE! and open to children of all ages.  You do not need to be a library card holder to participate.

Santa Claus is coming to town! This Saturday! Winter Wonderland! 2 - 4 p.m.

December 11th at 2 p.m. - SANTA CLAUS IS COMING! Come and see the jolly ole elf himself and Mrs. Claus at our Winter Wonderland!  Includes Nightmare of the Nutcracker original story and performance, written and performed by Youth Service staff. Stories, music, crafts & candy galore!

Holiday Mail for Heroes

Maitland Public Library is proud to participate in the Red Cross' initiative Holiday Mail for Heroes.  At Storytime Tuesday morning, 10:30 a.m, please drop by and make a card for our men and women serving in the armed forces overseas.  While we are enjoying our peace, the comfort of our homes, and the loved ones around us, please take a moment to remember the servicemen and women - our friends and neighbors - who will be away from their loved ones this holiday season.  All materials will be provided.  You do not need to be a library card holder to participate.  And thank you!

If you can't make it tomorrow, the Holiday Mail for Heroes program will continue from now until Thursday, December 9th, during normal library hours.

Talk and Painting Workshop by Doreen and Robert Butler about Florida Highwaymen

  The evening on October 16th opened with Doreen Butler answering questions and talking of her quite artistic family of painters, their styles of painting, and who, exactly, the Florida Highwaymen were... and are.

  www.floridahighwaymenpaintings.com sums up the movement this way: "In the early 1950’s through the 1980’s a group of twenty-six African-American artists known as the "Florida Highwaymen" used vivid and bright colors to display the beautiful untouched Florida landscape. The Florida Highwaymen painted wind-bent palm trees, serene sunsets, churning oceans and bright red Poinciana trees. They painted from their garages and back yards on inexpensive Upson board and then on the weekends they would travel and sell their Highwaymen paintings to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals who appreciated the artwork for around $25 a piece."

Then Doreen introduced her father, Robert Butler, who eloquently described how he became a Highwayman painter,his love of Florida's natural beauty, and what he does now.

Meanwhile, Doreen painted a breath-taking Florida landscape, which Robert Butler put the finishing touches on.

This was signed, auctioned off, and a portion of the proceeds generously donated to the Maitland Library. Those in the audience had the priviledge of talking to Doreen and Robert Butler one-on-one during refreshments afterward.

Teen Read Week Celebration! - Talk by author Kathy Picciano and Pizza Party

Celebrating the Teen Read Week theme "Books With Beat," Kathy Picciano will talk about her YA novel Imagine, writing, and the Rolling Stones this Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m..

READing Paws this Saturday at Maitland Civic Center!

Join us and our nationally registered therapy dogs this Saturday, October 9th, anytime between 1 and 3pm for READing Paws!  Read to our adorable four-legged friends in a no-pressure, non-judgemental environment where kids can practice, reinforce and build reading confidence.  Free and open to the public; you do not need to be a Maitland library card holder.  Children must be in Kindergarten or up.

A big THANK YOU! to all of you who came out on Saturday to help us celebrate Patriot Day.  A great time was had by all.  Those of you who were unable to attend, here's what you missed!

Once more READing Paws is on the prowl!  Children in grades K-5 are welcome to come and read to the READing Paws doggies in our Multipurpose Room.  It's a great chance to read in a no pressure environment to the cutest pooches around!  Drop by 1 - 3 p.m!

Second Saturday is also here again!  4 p.m. is the time, Maitland Library is the place!  This time we are celebrating all kinds of things, but especially National Library Card Month!  If you don't have a card, why not get one today?!  Do your kids have cards?  Just think of all the wonderful books, movies or music you could take home and enjoy while supporting YOUR library!  Come and here stories, songs and enjoy a puppet show, "Go West!" as we welcome in autumn, and salute our heroes in recognition of Patriot Day.  As always, there will be a craft and light refreshments.  Bring some friends!

About the Printz Award

The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. It is named for a Topeka, Kansas school librarian who was a long-time active member of the Young Adult Library Services Association. The award is sponsored by Booklist, a publication of the American Library Association.
