Join us as we participate in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® presented in partnership with Pearson Foundation. Its a national campaign that mobilizes adults and children to close the early education achievement gap by setting a reading world record.

This annual campaign allows Americans to demand that all children receive the quality early education they deserve. On October 6, 2011, more than 2 million voices will call for an end to America’s early education achievement gap by reading Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney – setting a world record in the process!

Here are the Novel Destinations Book Reviews. We want to thank everyone for participating. Everyone did a very good job and a lot of good literature was read and shared. Hopefully this will inspire you to read one or all of the following books, which have been recommended by your fellow reading enthusiasts.

The Paris Wife by Paula McClain, reviewed by Doris S. (4 suitcases): “The Paris Wife is historical fiction. The title refers to Hadley Richardson Hemingway who was Ernest Hemingway’s first wife. They start out in Chicago with a whirlwind courtship and marriage and set sail for Paris. There, they become “the Golden Couple” of an interesting group-The Lost Generation (F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda, Gertrude Stein, etc.) There’s lots of partying, drinking and intrigue and at the same time, Ernest Hemingway is struggling to find his voice as a writer. “The Sun Also Rises” is a reflection of this period of their life in Paris.”

The Lost City of Z by David Grann, reviewed by Doris S. (5 suitcases): “This book is a real life tale of adventure in the Amazon-“Deadly Ob-session in the jungle” Complete with hostile Indians-Cannibals, shrunken heads, ferocious insects and deadly diseases. Story of Percy Fawcett, English explorer, searching for El Dorado and lost civilizations, and the author’s own quest to find Fawcetts remains. Well written.”

The Snowman by Jo Nesbo, reviewed by Barbara B.: “Another Crime Thriller from Norway. Bone chilling, family dynamics with twists and turns with sinister results over 20 years-revolving around a Snowman-a terrifying game with results devised by the killer.”

The House at Riverton by Kate Morton, reviewed by Barbara B.: “Selling 1920’s WW I (1924) 1999. Family Secrets. Romance. Memories of a 98 year old widow how servitude, love, war, family and secrets shape the lives of a family around a place Riverton and how suspense and passion- is a “meditation or memory.””

A Nose for Justice by Rita Mae Brown, reviewed by Barbara B. (5 suitcases): “Selling a Nevada Ranch. Twists and turns solving a 1800 murder. Love and adventure. Protecting water supply. And ranch’s connection to Buffalo Bill.”

The Nick Adams Stories by Ernest Hemingway, reviewed by Cathy J. (4 suitcases): “Nick’s life often paralleled Hemingway’s. These stories are written in a deliberately simple style with short, sparse sentences. They still manage to convey the personality of Nick Adams. (Hemingway’s fictional altar ego) in these vignettes of his life from boyhood on, and many reflect Hemingway’s own life and his deep appreciation of the natural world around us.”

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton, reviewed by Barbara B.: (5 suitcases): “Very good intertwine of family from 1900, 1975 and 2005 from London to Australia with lots of twists and turns.”

The Pacts by Jennifer Sturman, reviewed by Barbara B.: “Fun series about a group of young women who stick together through thick and thin and have a yearly reunion. Always getting into trouble a mystery and intrigue.”

Dying to Decorate by Cindy Salzman, reviewed by Barbara B. (5 suitcases): Parallel story from present day, Civil War and Underground Railroad. There are also great recipes as well.

Crime and Clutter by Cynthia S. Salzmann, reviewed by Barbara B. (5 suitcases): “Parallel story from present day to turmoil of 60’s and anti-war. Great recipes also.”

Julia’s Hope by Leisha Kelly, reviewed by Barbara B. (5 suitcases): “Family during 129 depression forces to leave their home for promise of a future which fell through. How survival takes place against all odds.”

The Snowman by Nesbo, Jo, reviewed by Kay (5 suitcases): “I enjoy reading Scandinavian mysteries because they are set in a different political and social culture. Jo Nesbo falls under this criteria and does it very well. Norway, as the plot goes has never experienced a serial killer before the Snowman. I normally don’t read serial killer books, but set in the Norway Culture and the clever plot construction drops you in and you start thinking along with the protagonist, a creature out of American Noir. It’s a unique blend of noir and new and worth a read.”

Elizabeth Street by Laurie Fabiano, reviewed by Gail L.: “This is Laurie Fabiano first novel although she has written other non-fiction books. Her portrait of the Italian-American immigrant experience is dead-on. This engrossing cross-generational saga centers on the experiences of Giovanna Costa, from the small Italian fishing village where she is born to the bustling streets of New York’s Lower East Side where she struggles to raise her family and make a living as a midwife after the death of her first husband.

In America, the resourceful Giovanna and her second husband eventually open a fruit and vegetable stand, attracting the unwanted attentions of the notorious Black Hand crime organization. When Giovanni refuses to meet their demands, her daughter is kidnapped and held for ransom. Basing this story-including the kidnapping-on her own family’s immigrant experiences, Fabiano provides a wealth of period detail with an authentic sense of time, place, and community. A very enjoyable read.”

The Didgeridoo Down Under Show (DDU) is a high-energy, Australia-themed program that combines music, puppetry, comedy, environmental education, character building and audience participation. DDU is interactive, educational and super fun ... a one-of-a-kind musical & cultural experience for all ages!

Darren Liebman created DDU in 2003, and since then it has evolved into one of the most popular "edu-tainment" programs in the U.S. Darren and his didg mates perform year-round at schools, libraries, festivals and other venues. They have presented more than 3,000 shows and workshops at 1,800-plus venues for well over 300,000 viewers and participants!

Kuumba Dancers & Drummers

The dancers and percussionists of Kuumba's junior and senior companies entertain and educate with a program featuring traditional African dances and music from Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania and Senegal. Authentic costumes from those countries add vibrant color to the performances by this professional dance troupe, led by Natalie Jackson.

The Kuumba Dancers and Drummers have played a variety of colleges, schools, libraries, corporate events and festivals throughout Florida. The ensemble has opened concerts for several internationally known artists, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, King Sunny Ade, Chief Ebenezer.

While we are enjoying our peace, the comfort of our homes, and the loved ones around us, please take a moment to remember the servicemen and women - our friends and neighbors - who will be away from their loved ones this holiday season. Talk and Painting Workshop by Doreen and Robert Butler about Florida Highwaymen

The evening on October 16th opened with Doreen Butler answering questions and talking of her quite artistic family of painters, their styles of painting, and who, exactly, the Florida Highwaymen were... and are.

www.floridahighwaymenpaintings.com sums up the movement this way: "In the early 1950’s through the 1980’s a group of twenty-six African-American artists known as the "Florida Highwaymen" used vivid and bright colors to display the beautiful untouched Florida landscape. The Florida Highwaymen painted wind-bent palm trees, serene sunsets, churning oceans and bright red Poinciana trees. They painted from their garages and back yards on inexpensive Upson board and then on the weekends they would travel and sell their Highwaymen paintings to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals who appreciated the artwork for around $25 a piece."

Then Doreen introduced her father, Robert Butler, who eloquently described how he became a Highwayman painter,his love of Florida's natural beauty, and what he does now.

Meanwhile, Doreen painted a breath-taking Florida landscape, which Robert Butler put the finishing touches on.

This was signed, auctioned off, and a portion of the proceeds generously donated to the Maitland Library. Those in the audience had the priviledge of talking to Doreen and Robert Butler one-on-one during refreshments afterward.

So, here's to YOU, Maitland! A huge thanks to all of our loyal followers, a heartfelt welcome to all our newcomers, and last but by no means least, to our Teen Volunteers. The Whisperers by John Connolly, reviewed by Kay (5 out of 5 cans): "Connolly weaves a complex plot of several supernatural characters, a group of Iraq vets with PTSD and Pandora's box. PI Charlie Parker generally directs traffic and interfaces the supernatural with the 'real world.' What really raises the literary level of this novel is the eloquent presentation, by an Irishman, of how the rich and powerful in this country send our poor and minority kids off to a war of choice then ignores them when they come home broken in mind or body and are no longer useful. That tragedy is greater than any evil residing in Pandora's box."

Inside Paul Horn by Paul Horn with Lee Underwood, reviewed by Ted: "This is a book of a great musician who played with the likes of Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, etc. It changed his life style going on a spiritual odyssey as a universal traveler playing world music as the founding father of New Age. His 'Inside' series playing the flute inside the Tajmehal (India), the Great Pyramid (Egypt), the Cathedral (USSR), Findhorn (Scotland), and in China. More than an account of his life and times, it's an inspiring story of his journey to belief. Speaking of his life in universal terms by transcending every carrier uniting people everywhere, uplifting and inspiring to all of us. 'Music is trly universal.'"

Death and Judgement by Donna Leon , reviewed by Katie: "Police commissario, Guido Bruneti, must descent into Venice's under-world to solve murders as well as a slave trade business. It's run by important people in Venice, and justice and ethics are no where to be found. Really Good!"

On the Nickel by John Shannon, reviewed by Kay: "The John Shannon/Jack Liffey series are great stories that have flown under the best selling radar. Liffey is a former tech writer that is loid off and goes in a tail spin until he finds he can find missing kids and it makes him feel good about himself. The stories are LA centric which each one featuring a seperate area and /or demographic. This latest is centered around skid-row and his teenage daughter. Great reads. Highly entertaining and up-lifiting."

and the last review of the summer, submited by Kay, for Sizzling Sixteen by Janet Evanovich: "Janet Evanovitch is very good and successful at what she does. It really isn't crime fiction as I would describe it, but more a fanciful adventure story. I enjoyed her latest novel, to a degree, as kind of a soda cracker between a pair of gritty crime novels by JC Burle and Michael Connolly. I wonder what the feminists would call a book of improbable and impossible episodes carried out by three women because they know they had two strong men covering their backsides...if it were written by a man."

The winner of the $15 gift certificate to Austin's Coffee is Gail for her review of Rescuing Olivia by Julie Compton! She gave it 5 out of 5 "watering cans" and writes, “Anders Erickson has fallen in love with Olivia. One afternoon they go for a motorcycle ride and a car runs them off the road, causing an accident, and leaves Olivia in a coma. Olivia’s estranged father doesn’t want them together and goes to great lengths to keep them apart. Olivia disappears from the hospital and Anders goes on a long journey to search for her. There are many family secrets involved in the plot and the book takes the reader from Florida to Connecticut and then on to Africa where Olivia grew up. Anders races against time to rescue Olivia and has to confront his own past in the process.”

The winner of a free pizza from NYPD Pizzeria is Jean with her review of Nine Parts of Desire by Geraldine Brooks. Jean writes, "Her first book...interesting but 15 years old. Culture and religion collide often and I prefer her novels, but it's a fascinating look behind the veils of Muslim women in the Middle East. Misleading for other Muslims though."

Gator A Go Go by Tim Dorsey, reviewed by Alice: “Serge! Coleman! City and County! Our heroes follow spring break back in time from Panama City to Daytona Beach to the birth place of it all, Fort Lauderdale. Coleman becomes a guru to drug-blasted college students and Serge expands on his personal religion as the FBI and the Miami mob tangle with the witness protection program. Serge triumphs - Dorsey remains at the top of his form.”

Whiplash by Catherine Coulter, reviewed by Katie (2 cans): "A drug company suddenly has production problems with a drug used for cancer treatment and a Senator thinks someone is out to get him. Sherlock and Savich are on the case.”

Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson, reviewed by Gail (5 cans): “Two Americans who have a passion for diving, specifically wreck diving, find a German U-boat off the coast of New Jersey and helped solve a mystery that had lingered since WW II. Robert Kurson is a great writer who includes quite a bit of background information for those who know nothing about diving. An extremely interesting book.”

Sizzling Sixteen by Janet Evanovich, reviewed by Katie (4 cans): “As usual, great dialogue that makes me laugh! Vinny is kidnapped and he employs Stephanie, Luke and Connie so they must find him! Joe and Ranger help….Lots of fun!”

Bum Steer by Nancy Pickard, reviewed by Katie (4 cans): “I liked it a lot. Jenny visits Kansas, Texas and New Mexico as she tries to figure out why a huge ranch was left in a will to her foundation. Pickard’s characters are fascinating and her plot is intruiguing.”

A River in the Sky by Elizabeth Peters, reviewed by Joanne (4 cans): “Another entertaining light-weight mystery about archaeology and intuigue in ancient Palestine. No sleuthing skills needed, just entertaining easy listening.”

Tell No Lies by Julie Compton, reviewed by Gail (5 cans): “Very good book about an attorney who finds himself in a bind when another attorney friend that he works with is charged with murder and he is her only alibi. However, he is married with a child, so the situation makes it very difficult because he must make a decision about whether to stay in the marriage and seek forgiveness or confess in court that he was with the attorney on the night of the murder.”

The Devil by Ken Bruen, reviewed by Mr. Kay: “Ken Bruen has a unique voice that places him in the elite of crime fiction In ‘The Devil,’ he adds a little supernatural in the manner of John Connolly. While there is horrific violence at times, he doesn’t rub your nose in it, so you get the impact without wallowing in the gore. I can’t recommend Ken more. This is one of his best.”

Heidi by Johna Spyra, reviewed by Marium: “It’s an amazing book which highlights the differences between village and town life.”

NIV: The Authorized Biography of David Niven by Graham Lord, reviewed by Ted: "I have read 2 of David Niven's books: 'The Moon's A Balloon' - hilarious autobiography- and 'Bring On the Empty Horses'- Hollywood memoir- and I give both of these books the 5 watering cans rating. David Niven was one of the wittiest and funniest actors and human beings to grace this Earth. (See page 275 -Oscar Presentation was one of the funniest lines in cinema history). I can visually remember it like yesterday. This book, however, shows behind the charming and elegant man a dark side of tragedy involving his father, stepfather, and first and second wives. Yet through it all Niven had the gift of timing to cheer other people up. Mr. Lord did some extensive research, interviewing people from all over the world. NIV is a fitting tribute to a brave and brilliant man and is very well-written."

The Glass Rainbow by James Lee Burke, reviewed by Mr. Kay (at least 10 cans): "The Glass Rainbow has been called Burke's best Robicheaux novel. I've read them all over time, so I don't know about best, but I can't remember one where the textures are so multi-layered, the language so elegant, the smells so rich, the light so diffuse, and the air quite so electric. Robicheaux and his friend Clete tirelessly work to bring justice in a chaste society where the plantation society is still a force, as their world crumbles around them from decadence and evil permeates the air. Essentially it is the quintessential buddy story, the Bobsey Twins of Homicide righting the wrongs of a racist and archaic world. As I read the last few paragraphs for the umpteenth time my eyes still tear up and I get a catch in my throat: mortality!"

“A very scary book. Relates actual happenings during the aftermath of Katrina, in which an American citizen – Zeitoun – is held prisoner for 23 days – with no legal rights – on suspicion of looting. He was entirely innocent – a victim of the times. Suspenseful.”

Jennifer won a free large pizza certificate dontated by the Maitland NYPD Pizzeria for her review of Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill. She writes: “A story about a woman stolen in Africa and sold into slavery – so educational, and well-documented sources, even though it is a fictional read. I learned so much – well worth it!”

The Truth Hurts by Nancy Pickard, reviewed by Katie (rated 4 cans out of 5): “Marie Lightfoot, a true-crime writer, investigates the disappearance of her parents. Left in a hotel when she was a baby, her parents simply disappeared. They were involved in the civil rights movement and she returns to Alabama where she discovers the truth.”

The Politician by Andrew Young, reviewed by Doris: “An insider’s account of John Edwards’ rise and fall from grace, including deception, lust, greed, narcissism, ambition, lies and more. Would make a good Shakespeare tragedy.”

Killer Instinct by Zoee Sharp, reviewed by Mr. Kay: “Charlie Fox is an interesting character who whizzes around on her Japanese motorcycle teaching self-defense, sorting through her baggage and attracting violence. The series started in Daytona Beach in US publications, but started 3 or 4 books earlier in the U.K..Killer Instinct is the first – first. Fast-paced tale with plenty of violence and U.K.weather. Not much meat, but enjoyable if you’re into this kind of thing. Although Lee Child wrote the forward, Charlie is no Reacher – Jack never has any doubts.”

Where the River Ends by Charles Martin, reviewed by Masarrat.

Ring of Truth by Nancy Pickard, reviewed by Katie: “Very good! I like Marie Lightfoot, writer of true crimes. This time she’s investigating a crime filled with sex, violence, evil, and betrayal!”

I Remember Woody by Steve Greenberg and Dale Ratermann, reviewed by Ted: “Being an OSU alum, I can testify that this book tells it like it is about Woody Hayes, legendary football coach at Ohio State University. During my college days through the Woody Hayes era, I have many good memories and nice stories that I treasure. Whether you were pro-Woody or anti-Woody, these recollections are pure Woody, making you feel and see the old coach on the sidelines again - growling, yelling, and winning. Besides being a football genius, he was a legendary leader as well a complex man. I truley hope you fell like you know and understand Woody Hayes after reading this book. Above all else, it sets the record straight! A great read!”

The Whole Truth by Nancy Pickard, reviewed by Katie (rated 3 cans out of 5): “Marie Lightfoot is a true-crime author in Florida covering the trial of a killer. She knows this will be her best book ever because Raymond Raintree has committed a shocking crime. Really good!”

Twilight by Nancy Pickard, reviewed by Katie (3 cans out of 5): “Nancy Pickard writes a really good story - ties up all loose ends. This one is about a nature trail, a festival, and accidents that occur at Twilight.”

The Lion by Nelson DeMille, reviewed by Katie (4 cans): “DeMillle’s novel is about global terrorism. The Lion has returned with a mission of personal revenge as well as an act of terrorism against the U.S.. Fast-paced and entertaining.”

Confession by Nancy Pickard, reviewed by Katie (2 cans): “Written in 1994. (I’m reading all of Pickard’s books and the most recent have been excellent). This one not so much.”

Pray for Silence by Linda Costello, reviewed by Mr. Kay (4 cans): “The author has transitioned from writing romantic adventure to police-centered thrillers that feature a serial killer, mass murder, rape of teenaged girls, and making snuff movies set in the contrasting environment of the pacifist Amish culture

The main protagonist was Amish but excommunicated as a teenager who returns 17 years later with police experience to become Chief of Police in a small rural gap between the Amish culture and the Englisher establishment. However, she is shunned by thhe Amish and never fully accepted by the Englishers.

The author never fully leaves the Romance genre, which leads to some 'flowery' language that I wouldn't expect in a thriller. Royal Murders by Dulcie Ashdown, reviewed by Alice: "Written baldly, with no wit, the author leaves nothing for the sincere reader about the Dark and Middle Ages. Beginning with the Renaissance, the author offers more detail but totally without humor and insight. The author also seems to have discarded the practice of beginning paragraphs with sentences that announce the subject, resulting in paragraphs that relate to sentences, sprinkled throughout the previous paragraph(s). Following her thoughts is difficult, and proving her point to the reader is impossible without organization."

Donovan, Jr. and Bob Drury (not rated): "You don't have to be a sports fan to appreciate this book! Fatso is full of tales of both mayhem and irreverence from a by-gone era of football. It also is a biting commentary on how the game has changed in more recent years as (the author) lets loose a barrage of commentary on the game, and nothing is sacred form his shrewd and amusing perspective. Donovan nostalgically recalls the days when football was a game and not a business, played on grass, not astroturf; players relaxed together as a team by good-natured activities, not posing for individual product endorsments. Donovan has appeared on numerous talk shows because of his engaging, funny personality. There's never a dull moment when he speaks. This book is a real hoot - come on now and jump on the joy ride! Try it, you'll like it!"

Well-written and informative indirectly, but not major literature. Good minor league lit, I'd say."

61 Hours by Lee Child, reviewed by Katie (4 cans): "I love Jack! He ends up in South Dakota on a crashed bus where he's involved in protecting a witness. It has drugs, a drug lord, and a deserted Army base where it all comes together."

Apple Turnover Murder by Joanne Fluke, reviewed by Joanne(4 cans): "Always great fun - these mysteries that are full of recipes are well-written light reading. Always 'G'-rated and entertaining. Lots of enticing recipes in this one, and several amusing plots, along with the murder, which was committed on a much-hated fellow nobody missed much."

Supreme Justice by Phillip Margolin, reviewed by Katie (3 cans): "A death row prisoner has appealed her case to the Supreme Court, where I judge, resigns and another is attacked. Dana is called in to investigate and it leads he to a small freighter containing a dead crew and drugs! She finds a plot that includes some very important people and the CIA. Really good!"

Rise and Shine by Anna Quindlen, reviewed by Doris (3 cans): "Story of the Fitzmauriel sisters: one is a TV talk-show host and one is a social worker in Manhattan. Interesting tale of their problems, after Meaghan (TV host) lets slip a profanity and loses her job. 'Engrossing exploration of fame, shame and sisterhood.' Hartford Gourant"

About Face by Donna Leon, reviewed by Katie: "Really good! Brunetti investigates the shadowy, toxic world of the island of Marghera, and the way in which toxic waste is stored and disposed of."

Bodies in Winter by Robert Knightly, reviewed by Mr. Kay: "Kinda like a roller coaster ride: started out slowly, climbed to a climax of sorts, then coasted for a while after the action stopped. Actually, the middle was pretty good: good cops versus bad cops covering up bad cop stuff. A couple of likeable protagonists, but everyone else suffered from 'cya' syndrome."

Trough A Glass Darkly by Donna Leon, reviewed by Katie: "In this book, Commissario Brunetti investigates a man murdered on the island of Murano in front of a blazing furnace of the glass factory. Good!"

Uniform Justice by Donna Leon, reviewed by Katie: "Commissario Brunetti investigates a suicide of a youg man found hanged at a military academy. He is plunged into the strange and stormy politics of his country's elite. I enjoyed it and especially that it takes place in Venice."

I can't recomment Craig Johnson high enough. Worth a trip to Vero at the end of the month to meet him!"

It revolves around a high-caste Zorastrian housewife and her illiterate Hindu maid. The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, reviewed by Gail: "Enzo is a lab terrier mix born on a farm outside Seattle, Washington. He is bought by Denny Swift to ride shotgun with him in a race car as he pursues success on the track and off. Enzo tells the story as he reflects back over his life with Denny, his wife and daughter. Denny gets into some unbelievable situations, and Enzo is always his supporter, although a silent one. Enzo wants to be reborn as a man when he dies, and throughout the book, Enzo has so much to teach all of us about life."

61 Hours by Lee Child, reviewed by Gail: "Jack Reacher really got himself in a bind in this fast-paced men's adventure story. When a tour bus on which he bummed a ride skids off the road and crashes, Reacher finds himself in Bolton, South Dakota. A methamphetamine lab run by a very violent drug cartel has begun operating at an abandoned military facility in Bolton. Reacher helps the local cops figure out what is happening, with his military intelligence background being a great asset. The ending is a huge cliff-hanger."

The Lion by Nelson Demille, reviewed by Mr. K: "The elite of the terrorist-based best-sellers. The terrorist is pure evil and the egocentric hero is dominant enough so you just know he won't fail. Add Demille's sharp sense of humor and the hero is able to carry the intervals when the terrorist is killing his prey and all his witnesses/helpers. If the hero is so smart, why did he amble cluelessly into the trap? To set up the bloody climax, why else? Excellent read!"

It was interesting that the epilogue told which parts of the story were historically accurate and what was changed to suit the story."

Julie's Talk Kicks Off Library Adult Summer Reading

Julie Compton spoke about her newest thriller, Rescuing Olivia, and answered questions from book lovers of all ages. This is the second novel for this Altamonte Springs writer. Originally from St. Louis, MO, Julie has 5 older brothers, and so is very comfortable writing from a male point of view. A former lawyer, Julie's first book was Tell No Lies, often called a legal thriller. Both her books are available to check out at your library. Julie is returning to Maitland Library on July 28th to speak to the Contemporary Authors book discussion group at 1:30 p.m.. This event is free and open to the public.

Attendees enjoyed hot and iced tea (out of china tea cups) and finger foods to celebrate the Adult Summer Reading program theme, "Water Your Mind: Read!." This Maitland Library program runs from June 6th to July 31st, and encourages anyone over 17 to read and submit a short sentence about a book they have listened to or read. Each Monday until August, one lucky reader will win a prize donated by a local business in a drawing. Businesses donating prizes include Maitland Tire Company, Enzian Theater, First Watch, Copper Rocket Pub, NYPD Pizzeria, Qdoba's Mexican Grill, and Austin's Coffee House. Coretta Scott King Book Award Winners now identified!

For years, the Caldecott and Newbery award winners have topped our reading lists for children's literature. However, few people are aware of the Coretta Scott King (CSK) award for children's literature. Coretta Scott King who sadly left this world in 2006, was an American author, activist, civil rights leader, and widow of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here are some fun facts about Nancy Drew:

Edward Stratemeyer created Nancy Drew.

The first three books in the series: The Secret of the Old Clock, The Hidden Staircase, and The Bungalow Mystery all debuted on April 28, 1930.

Carolyn Keene was a pseudonym for many ghostwriters over the years.

In the early books, Nancy often wore glamorous heels and fashionable frocks while chasing suspects, climbing ladders, and sleuthing for “ghosts” in secret passageways.

Nancy Drew never takes money for her detective work—she is an amateur detective after all!

Since 1930, Nancy Drew has solved over 500 cases! Pretty good for an 80 year old sleuth.

Nancy Drew packed heat—carrying her father Carson Drew’s revolver in two early mysteries— the 1930 text of The Hidden Staircase and the 1931 text of The Secret at Shadow Ranch (she shot a lynx.) In contrast, in the 1965 Nancy Drew book, The Spider Sapphire Mystery, when confronted with guns, Nancy and her pal George Fayne tossed them into a brook.

Some famous Nancy Drew fans include: Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sandra Day O’Connor, First Lady Laura Bush, TV Personalities Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters, Mystery Authors Nancy Pickard, Sara Paretsky, P.M. On May 4, it would have been Audrey Hepburn's 81st birthday and during the month of May, we are going to celebrate Audrey by showing some of her movies each Tuesday @ 2pm in the Library's multipurpose room.

Tuesday, May 4 - Roman Holiday - Young Princess, tired of the constraints her position brings, runs away. She doesn't know the man who befriends her is a reporter, played by Gregory Peck, out for the story. (118 minutes)

Tuesday, May 11 - Funny Face - Fashion photographer played by Fred Astaire turns bookish Hepburn into a top Paris fashion model in this delightful musical with a classic gershwin score. (103 minutes)

Tuesday, May 18 - Charade -Hepburn meets Grant on a skiing trip in the Alps. When she returns home to Paris, she finds her apartment ransacked, her husband dead and crooks searching for a fortune they’re convinced she’s hiding. As she avoids the sinister group, she becomes fond of Grant who comes to her aid. One by one, each gang member is murdered, making it more difficult for her to distinguish the good guys from the bad ones.

Tuesday, May 25 - Breakfast at Tiffany's - Audrey Hepburn stars as Holly Golightly, the beautiful, if eccentric New York playgirl who won't let anything interfere with her plans to marry a millionaire, not even a romance with new neighbor George Peppard. (115 minutes)

Writing Your Own Stories

Writing Your Own Stories is a 3-part memoir writing workshop which will be offered to Maitland Public Library cardholders, with meetings in June, August and November.

Philip F. Deaver, permanent Writer in Residence and Professor of English at Rollins College, will teach the course. Of memoir writing and the writer, he says, "You know you want to do it. You think about it all the time. You've probably even already written stories about your life. Here's a chance to get started...or to get going on it again."

Attendees will participate in an online community to stay in contact, to encourage one another and to share information. The library will provide a class for novices in the use of Yahoo Groups.

Classes will be held on June 12th, August 28th and November 6th, all from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

What a turn out! Saturday, April 24th was a wonderful opportunity for our Youth Services staff to meet with the public, talk about Summer Reading 2010, and share some goodies. Over 600 people dropped by our library display! Many thanks to all of you who were able to attend, and to those of you who couldn't make it, we look forward to having you over at the library for our amazing line up of summer reading programs starting Saturday, June 5th at 2:30 p.m. when we kick off summer reading with The Mad Hatter's Tea Party! Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Meet Jonathan Dolce, Youth Services Librarian

Jonathan is our new Youth Services Librarian. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His mother was from England and he spent five years living there while also visiting Scotland and Wales. While living in England, he went on a ten-day Library Tour which led him to becoming a librarian. He also lived in Puerto Rico for two years and still owns property there.

Jonathan received his BA degree from Stetson University in Deland and his graduate degree from FSU. He was a library volunteer in Volusia County for seven years and then worked at a paid position for another seven years.

Jonathan lives in Deltona. He is married and has a nine year old daughter.
